Emerson Royal was born in São Paulo on 14 January 1999. He started out playing youth football for Campinas-based side Ponte Preta, with whom he made his first-team debut in February 2017. After his first foray – and his first goals  - in men's football, he moved to Belo Horizonte to join Atlético Mineiro. In January 2019, he got his move to Europe: Barcelona bought him in accordance with Real Betis in a deal that would see him stay in Seville, but with the Catalan giants retaining a buyback option. He had his best spell to date with Betis, scoring five goals and providing ten assists in 79 games (LaLiga, Copa del Rey and Europa League). In 2021, the Blaugrana bought him back, but he ended up moving to Tottenham at the end of the window.

The longest spell of his career so far was at Spurs, and it has been a fruitful one. He made 101 appearances and scored three goals in North London, getting a taste for Champions League football. He even played against AC Milan in both legs of the round of 16 in 2022/23. An attacking full-back who has great technique and can dribble at pace and tracks back well, Emerson Royal is also part of the Brazil national team. As of July 2024, he has played ten times for the Selecão, with the highlight being his involvement in the 2021 Copa America and an appearance in the final against Argentina.
