COPPA ITALIA: 10 FACTS ON AC MILAN V INTER

The main stats ahead of the first-leg semi-final showdown in the Coppa Italia

24 days on from Giroud’s match-winning brace, AC Milan and Inter are set to meet again for the third Derby of the season. A tense game awaits, with both teams looking to progress from the Coppa Italia semi-finals. Ahead of kick-off, which is scheduled for 21:00 CET, here are the stats and fun facts that you need to know:

DIRECT ENCOUNTERS

1- A total of 25 Derby fixtures have been played in the Coppa Italia. AC Milan have the edge, with ten wins compared to Inter’s eight. There have been seven draws.

2- AC Milan and Inter have met each other just two times in cup semi-finals: during the 2002/03 Champions League and the 1984/85 Coppa Italia. On both occasions, the Rossoneri made it to the final (a 0-0 draw at home and a 1-1 away draw in the UCL in May 2003; a 2-1 away victory followed by a 1-1 home draw in Italy’s national cup competition in June 1985).

3- AC Milan are unbeaten in seven of their last eight matches against Inter across the Coppa Italia, Champions League and Supercoppa Italiana (W4, D3). In percentage terms, the Rossoneri have lost 38% of their matches against the Nerazzurri in the league; in cup competitions, however, this figure stands at 27%.

4- The Rossoneri have lost just one of their last eight Coppa Italia matches (W4, D3), with this defeat coming against Inter at the quarter-final stage last season (2-1, 26 January 2021).

5- AC Milan have been involved in 17 first-leg fixtures in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, eleven of which finished in draws. The Rossoneri won two of those games: a 2-1 success against Inter on 23 June 1985 and a 1-0 victory over Alessandria on 26 January 2016.

GENERAL STATS

6- AC Milan have kept a clean sheet in eleven of their last 17 Coppa Italia fixtures. No team have done better in this regard since the 2017/18 campaign (eleven clean sheets for Juventus too).

7- AC Milan are the team that have found the net the most in the opening half an hour (20 goals) and final 30 minutes of play (21 goals) this Serie A season. As for the Nerazzurri, they’re the side that have conceded the fewest second-half goals (nine).

PLAYER FOCUS

8- Olivier Giroud has scored in each of his two Coppa Italia fixtures. The last AC Milan player to find the net in three consecutive matches in the tournament was Mario Balotelli on 1 March 2016 (the first three matches he played in the competition with AC Milan).

9- Out of all the Serie A players, only Berardi (eleven) has provided more assists than Hernández (9) in all competitions in 2021/22. Theo is also the Rossoneri player who has played the most minutes in all competitions this campaign (2472).

10- Alessandro Florenzi’s only Coppa Italia goal came against Inter on 23 January 2013, back when he was on Roma’s books (a 2-1 victory for the Giallorossi).
