TIME MACHINE: KAKÁ IN INTER v AC MILAN

The derby is back. Inter v AC Milan is a fixture that defines the history of football in this city. It's matchday 4 of Serie A and the Rossoneri return from the international break with a huge match in store. To get you in the mood for kick-off, we're going back to 5 October 2003 and Ricardo Kaká making his first derby appearance.

It was matchday 5 of the 2003/04 season and AC Milan (10) and Inter (8) had just two points separating them in the table. The Rossoneri, who were reigning champions of Europe, went into the derby following a big 3-0 win over Lecce, while the Nerazzurri had drawn in Udine in their previous fixture. Carlo Ancelotti went with his favoured 4-3-1-2 formation, with new arrival Kaká - who had virtually cemented a starting berth already - behind strikers Inzaghi and Shevchenko. The Rossoneri set about imposing their gameplan onto the proceedings and opened the scoring with a Pippo Inzaghi goal 'alla Pippo Inzaghi'. He got a deft touch onto Pirlo's free-kick and turned it home to make it 1-0.

It was all plain sailing from there on out as the Rossoneri doubled their lead through an unusual connection. Gattuso drove into the box and crossed for Kaká, whose header looped past Toldo and into the corner of the net. That was Ricky's very first goal in Serie A, in a derby no less. In the 77th minute, Shevchenko picked up the ball from Cafu and sent a powerful driven shot between the keeper's legs to cap off AC Milan's dominance. Inter pulled one back late on through Martins but their time had run out: the Rossoneri were to triumph.
